Important Info for whoever is Editing your reel:

1. You will have to register with Vimeo to download -- takes 2 min. and is free. Or just get in on someone's Vimeo account for this download.
2. All videos are 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio 1080p MOV's and at 23.98p with the exception of Superhero Talent which is 1080p @ 29.97p. You will have to scale down to 16:9 Anamorphic 720*480p for SD DVD reels. For BLU-RAY and Online HD Reels just go straight across at 1080p. For your website downconvert as needed and maintain correct 1.78:1 aspect ratio.
3. Color and sound on these videos is the latest version and to keep it looking and sounding good I would keep the bit-rate as high as possible and maintain the Progressive frame rate. 
4. For Download go to Download Link on bottom right of each video and click on it. If that does not work I recommend right-clicking and "Save Target as..." or "Save Link as..." on the download video link. Then you should be able to save the MOV file to your computer.

If there is a specific 45 secs or less section you need for your reel, and it is not up on Vimeo, let me know and I will make it for you.

LACKING LEWIS wins 2 Awards at Accolade Film Competition

LACKING LEWIS wins Award of Merit for Best Short Film and Award of Merit for Creativity and Originality at The Accolade Competition, La Jolla, CA. October 2009. The Accolade Competition is MovieMaker magazine's Top 25 Film Competitions/Festivals worth the entry fee.

LACKING LEWIS is my first film and I had the film re-mastered and enhanced this year at Mission Control and Todd-AO so getting these awards makes the extra work feel even more worth it.

SALT AND SILICONE New EFILM Color Pass done

So I QC'd the new color pass again at EFILM. Colorist felt that there was no need to go to DI and increase exposure on faces of "Vex" and "Keira" INT. CAR for creative and technical reasons. Watching the film again with him I started to agree. I approved the DAVINCI 2K pass which will be layed out to HDCAMSR + 1 Dub. They have to punch in new credits and slate and my deliverables should be ready in 24hrs

Back to Portland this weekend. I can sit with pass for at least a month, project the HDCAMSR at Mission Control, print a Tiff sequence and generate downconverts, and make sure I love the new color pass on an extended basis. Then I can come back to EFILM in Nov/Dec feeling confident to Film Out to 35mm.

Revisiting SALT AND SILICONE Color Grading with EFILM in DAVINCI 2K and DIGITAL INTERMEDIATE

I am revisiting the color grading in "Salt and Silicone" before I consider this project done. My desire for a particular "look" has become more serious, complex, and thankfully more articulate in the past few months.

Specifically, I have learned more about color grading and want to try some linear to logarithmic gamma shifts (to create that "cinema" look) and red abatement in the pass, complicate the color palette and make sure it is FILM OUT ready, still have disparate looks for "Vex's" disparate perspectives all while maintaining naturalistic skin tones and work in an uncompressed environment with a post-house that specializes in this process with proprietary techniques, software and hardware: enter Academy Award Winning Color Correction post-house EFILM who I have a pre-established relationship with.

Friday, Sept 25, 2009: EFILM Davinci Colorist Brian George set up my PreColor HDCAMSR Master on an EFILM tricked out DAVINCI 2K and in a few short hours wowed me with his color correction skills, aesthetic and rapidity. He is a technician and an artist and we had some stimulating back and forth as he educated me on why he was making the shifts in color he was making. DI Producer Hal Cohen of EFILM and SALT AND SILICONE Film Editor Shane Sattler who sat in on the session were similarly impressed. Frankly I did not fully agree with Brian's approach in the beginning but soon realized that his eye for color and clearly his experience are at a level that I had to step up to and appreciate which I did. By the end of the session I was more than sold, I was impressed.

EFILM has given the film a complex, cinematic "look", gorgeous skin tones, and still satisfied my need to separate each "episode" to show "Vex's" conflict over breast implants. He stayed away from washing the frame with one strong color for disparation in color grade from episode to episode but rather used color relationships to generate a distinct, strong, complex look for each episode. He focused more on a mood change through color rather than a virtual location change in color -- we are in the same lighting store but we are here in a different mood as per "Vex". I could say more but seeing the new color pass is the best experience which audiences will see when SALT AND SILICONE festivals in 2010.

The only area that I am still not fully satisfied with is some underexposed portions of the INT. CAR scenes -- specifically characters "Vex" (myself--Warren Pereira) and "Keira" (Katie O' Grady) are underexposed in camera. Any global raising in exposure on the DAVINCI even with vignette Power Windows shows a video noise that must be avoided. So, this will be dealt with in EFILM'S DI (DIGITAL INTERMEDIATE) proprietary Suite next week where we can Rotoscope my face and Katie's face and bring up exposure as needed.

"Salt and Silicone" 35mm Premiere Screening this Thursday, April 9, 7pm, at Hollywood Theater in Portland, OR. Officially this April 9, 2009 screening will be considered a work-in-progress screening. Changes to the film will be made based on audience reaction. The official festival run for "Salt and Silicone' will begin in 2010.

"Lovely Coffee" will screen at 9:20pm, April 2 at the 2009 Beverly Hills Film Festival. Had a good experience with this festival last year for "Who's Good Looking?" so I look forward to this year. The only negative is that projection options are DV-CAM and 35mm. So I have to show DV-CAM since I do not have 35mm for "Lovely Coffee". Hopefully I will get in next year and show a 35mm "Salt and Silicone" print.

Final Post-Production on the past 4 short films complete!

As of January 2009, my past 4 short films have been mastered and re-mastered to the highest professional standards. Specifically all are now at 1080p, have 5.1 Dolby Digital audio and are archived on HDCAM SR tape.

In essence additional post-production audio and video were completed on "Lacking Lewis", "Who's Good Looking?", "Superhero Talent", and "Lovely Coffee"; now finally, in January 2009, I can say that all work on these films is done.

"Salt and Silicone" will undergo further post-production tweaks based on my upcoming work with Deluxe and Efilm, the reaction of April 9, 2009 "work-in-progress" screening, and based on what is best for its 2010 festival run.

Mixed Audio to "Salt and Silicone" 35mm print at Todd-AO Stage 2

"Salt and Silicone" was print mastered at Todd-AO Burbank in May 2008 but when the decision to do a film-out with Dolby Digital theatrical audio was made I had to have the audio remixed/Dolby certified for the film-out at Todd-AO Hollywood. We re-mixed the audio for "Salt and Silicone" today (Dec 29, 2008) at Todd-AO Hollywood Stage 2 (very nice stage by the way, must mix here again) with mixer Aaron Levy and Dolby Tech Bryan Arenas. We mixed to a 35mm MOS in the tradition of mixing major motion pictures to a film print as opposed to mixing to an MOV or digital tape. Technically this should have the best sync to the 35mm answer prints which I will be reviewing at Deluxe next week. Both Dolby Digital and Analog Dolby SR tracks sound nice and full. I was a little concerned with the PQ of the 35mm MOS print (little dark and slightly cloudy) but this could simply be because we are looking at an MOS work print instead of an answer print, and because we are projecting from a dubbing projector, not a screening projector. I dropped the Magneto Optical disc to Hal Cohen at Efilm, he let me know that they will shoot the audio on to film on Monday. Hal I and both talked about "Slumdog Millionaire", we both think it is superior to all films out this year.
